DXF (Drawing eXchange Format) was developed by Autodesk in 1982 for AutoCAD. It is primarily a 2D drawing interchange format but also supports 3D entities. DXF is the most universally supported CAD data exchange format in the industry — from CAD software to laser cutters, CNC routers, plasma cutters and vinyl cutters.
DXF is the lingua franca for cutting machines. Laser cutters, CNC routers, plasma cutters and waterjet machines all read DXF.
DXF is the standard for exchanging 2D technical drawings between AutoCAD, ZWCAD, BricsCAD, LibreCAD and other drafting tools.
Architects share floor plans, sections and site plans in DXF for import into structural analysis and construction software.
AutoCAD, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, LibreCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, Rhino, Inkscape, CorelDRAW and virtually all CAD and vector tools.
For 3D conversion, DXF is used to export 3D wireframe or surface models for hybrid 2D/3D workflows or CNC machine controllers.
